Joint replacement is a surgical process in which portions of an arthritic or diseased joint are removed and replaced with a prosthesis made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. The prosthesis is intended to mimic the motion of a normal, healthy joint. Although hip and knee replacements are the most popular, replacement surgery can also be performed on other joints such as the ankle, wrist, shoulder, and elbow. Joint replacement surgery is only a few hours long. The operation is carried done either a hospital or an outpatient surgery center. The damaged cartilage and bone in your joint are removed during surgery and replaced with prosthetic components made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. The prosthesis is designed to replicate the shape and movement of a natural joint. In an arthritic hip, for example, the damaged ball (the upper end of the femur) is replaced with a metal ball attached to a metal stem that fits into the femur, and a plastic socket implanted into the pelvis to replace the damaged socket.
